Why we chose this school
I chose this school because of its strong academic reputation and its focus on both academics and emotional growth. To send my daughter here, we moved to Forest Lake and adjusted our budget to cover the higher tuition fees. While it’s been a financial stretch, I believe the value my daughter receives makes it worth the cost.
What we like and dislike
What I like most about Forest Lake State High is the supportive community and the focus on individual growth, both academically and personally. I also appreciate the variety of extracurricular activities available, which allows my daughter to explore different interests. On the flip side, what I dislike is how sometimes communication with the school administration can be a bit slow, making it hard to get quick answers when needed.

Compared with other schools
The school does a good job integrating technology into classroom learning, with interactive lessons and digital tools that enhance student engagement. They also use an online platform to keep parents updated on assignments, grades, and school events, which has been really convenient. However, it could improve by offering more training or resources to help parents navigate the platform better, especially for those who aren’t as tech-savvy.

In my opinion, the school does a great job of balancing academic rigor with the overall well-being of students. While the academics are challenging, the staff is very supportive, ensuring that students have the resources they need to succeed without feeling overwhelmed. They also place a strong emphasis on mental health, offering counseling services and promoting a healthy work-life balance for the students.
Expectations versus reality
I had high academic expectations for the school, hoping for strong teaching, a well-rounded curriculum, and opportunities for advanced learning. I’m happy to say it has exceeded my expectations, especially in providing a solid foundation in both core subjects and critical thinking. The school has also offered enrichment programs that I didn’t initially expect, which has been a pleasant surprise and has really challenged my daughter in a positive way.

The school provides excellent support for students who struggle with reading, writing, or other academic challenges. There are dedicated learning support staff who offer one-on-one sessions and tailored resources to help students at their own pace. My daughter has benefited from this support, and I've seen noticeable improvements in her confidence and academic performance as a result.

Forest Lake State High takes bullying very seriously, with clear policies in place and programs to teach students about respect and kindness. They also have a dedicated team that works to address any issues quickly and effectively, which I really appreciate. My daughter has had a positive social experience overall, feeling supported by both peers and staff, and I've noticed a strong emphasis on inclusivity in the school culture.
The surrounding area and safety
The immediate surroundings of Forest Lake are generally quite peaceful, with a few residential areas and local parks nearby. There are some busy roads around the area, but the school has good traffic management in place and crossing guards to keep kids safe. While it's generally safe, there are occasional concerns about loitering near the outskirts, though the school staff does a good job of keeping an eye on things.
The parent community
Yes, there is definitely a close-knit community of parents at Forest Lake. Many parents get to know each other through school events, volunteer opportunities, and informal gatherings, which helps create a sense of community. While some families are more independent, I’ve found that most parents enjoy connecting and supporting each other in a friendly, welcoming environment.
How the school works with parents
The school has been fairly engaged with parents through regular newsletters, parent-teacher meetings, and school events, which keeps us in the loop. When it comes to responding to queries or complaints, they are generally responsive, though there have been times when follow-ups could be quicker. It would be helpful if they could establish more consistent communication channels, perhaps with a more streamlined process for handling concerns.
Experience of the sports program
My daughter has really enjoyed the school’s sports programs, especially the emphasis on teamwork and fitness. The variety of sports offered has kept her engaged, and she’s built lasting friendships through the teams. One area for improvement would be to offer more opportunities for younger kids to get involved in less competitive, recreational sports to build their skills and confidence.
Experience of arts activities
I would rate the school’s focus on performing and creative arts quite highly. They offer a variety of programs, from music and drama to visual arts and design technology, which gives students plenty of opportunities to explore their creativity. My child has benefited from these programs, and it’s clear that the school values the importance of arts education in fostering well-rounded students.
